The Middlesex baseball team was limited to three hits and fell to St. Mark's by a 4-1 score on Monday in the season opener for both teams.
With fields still reeling from the harsh winter, the contest was played at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, an all turf facility. St. Mark's scratched across an unearned run off of Middlesex starter Zach Steer in the top of the second but Steer answered with a two out RBI single that scored Kai Long to tie the game in the bottom of the second.
St. Mark's scored another in the third for a 2-1 lead and the scored remained there through five innings. Steer singled to open the bottom of the fifth but the Zebras were unsuccessful in their attempt to bunt him over and the inning fizzled.
Two more unearned runs off of reliever Ben Cherington in the top of the sixth inning gave St. Mark's some insurance for a 4-1 final. Steer went five strong innings on the mound and had two hits to lead Middlesex. The Zebras look to even their record when they travel to St. Paul's on Wednesday.
