The Middlesex baseball team batted around in the third and fifth innings on Wednesday and rode the strong pitching of junior righthander Kai Long to a 6-1 victory over Lawrence Academy for their first win of the season.
Lawrence struck first on a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the second but is all they could muster against Long, who pitched a complete game and struck out 7. The Middlesex offense plated three runs in the bottom of the third, two runs coming on an error and one an RBI single by Ben Cherington.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Middlesex scored three insurance runs. The rally was started by a single by Long, followed by an Austin Perry walk and an Austin Dorsey single, which loaded the bases with one out. Consecutive walks by Chase Steer, Kyle Finke and Mike Doherty plated the Middlesex runs.
Long was aided by solid defense by Doherty and Finke in the middle infield. Middlesex returns to action against Rivers on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
