Girls' Tennis Edged at Lawrence, 8-7

4/23/2015 12:08:00 PM

The Middlesex Varsity Tennis team lost 7 - 8 to Lawrence Academy Wednesday in a nail-biting contest that went down to the last doubles match to be decided. Severely windy conditions challenged both teams as they struggled with pace on each point.

At the close of the singles matches, Middlesex and Lawrence were tied. Sophomore Caroline Reynolds (#3) handily won both her sets 6 - 1, 6 - 1 by playing consistently and drawing errors from her opponent. Though having a bit of an off day on her first serves, Abby Meyers '16 at #4 singles, again had a great match 6 - 2, 6 - 0, constructing savvy points and persistently going after each ball. Senior captain Katie Bull at #6 singles proved to be the more aggressive player, taking more risks than her opponent with pace and spin which in the end paid off - she won both of her sets 6 - 3 and 7 - 5.

Leyla Hotamisligil and Caroline Reynolds started off ahead and had a close match at #1 doubles with most games going into deuce. Unfortunately, their opponent was able to break their initial lead and took the set 5 - 8. Senior Electra Washburn and junior Emma Pratt played an impressive doubles match at #3, winning the set 8 - 3. Electra's volleying was unstoppable at net and Emma consistently put the ball back in play from the baseline with strong ground strokes. The final match point came down to #2 doubles with sophomore Laura Kaye and Katie Bull battling out on each point and in each game. The final score of the set was a very tight Middlesex loss of 6 - 8.

Ultimately, it was a close match and disappointing loss for the Middlesex team. With one very focused practice tomorrow, the team looks forward to picking itself up and dusting off before facing Rivers on Friday.
