The first match versus St. Paul's School pitted the ISL's biggest team in terms of numbers against the Middlesex team, which forfeited three weight classes in 113lbs, 120lbs, and 126lbs. It turns out that this was the difference as Middlesex won six but lost five in the 11 matches wrestled, falling 48-33.
Strong performances included Gavin Fujimori with a pin in the second period at 145lbs and captain Gabe Smith also won by pin at 152lbs.
Jivan Purutyan pinned his opponent midway through the second period, while Nick Agee took on a tough St. Paul's wrestler, using the full 6 minutes to reach a 3-1 score, grabbing the takedown late into the third period. Captain George Morris dominated with a first period pin and Steve Zawada took less than a minute to end the match with a pin.
The second match against St Marks became a momentum builder, as the team seemed intent on finishing strong. Winning seven of nine matches wrestled, the schools each gave up a few forfeits. After a forfeit gathered by Emily Yu, Marcus Coward worked a strong neutral position to win 10-3. Gavin Fujimori, Gabe Smith, Nick Agee, Andrew Zhang, George Morris and Naomi Hunt all pinned their opponents.
It was exciting to see Naomi get back on track with a second period pin. Andrew Zhang showed great resolve after finding himself down 11-5 in the third and last period. He managed to stay the course and created an opportunity to win with less than a minute to go. He was awarded the pin to the home crowds standing ovation as the Zebras rolled 57-24.
