Girls' Varsity Squash Edged by St. George's, 4-3

2/23/2015 10:18:00 AM

Middlesex finished off its ISL season with two 4-3 matches. Ten days ago, the Zebras edged St. Paul's 4-3, winning at positions 7-4.  Junior Kaylie Joo won 3-0 at #7, sophomore Olivia Gish won 3-0 at #6, and junior Mari Herrema won 3-0 at #5--all played with authority, making their strength clear from the outset.  At #4, junior Hadley Parker prevailed in a very tight match, after losing the first game 11-6.  Hadley came back to win the second game and then two very tight games 15-13 and 12-10, to seal the victory for the Zebras.

Yesterday, the Zebras' ISL season came to an end with the kind of close match often contested with St. George's. Junior Mari Herrema got the team off to a strong start with a 3-0 victory at #6, while senior Katie Bull couldn't quite break through against her highly skilled opponent and lost in three close games at #2. At #4, the match seesawed.  Junior Hadley Parker won the first game with authority, but her opponent came back with strong crosscourt hitting to win the second game. Hadley reasserted her movement and placement in the third game to prevail once again; however, her opponent raised her game to win two games in row, and St. George's was up 2-1. Olivia Gish won with speedy authority at #5 and the match was tied, 2-2.  The #7 match was a long and grueling one, but Kaylie Joo eventually prevailed in four very close games; meanwhile, however, St. George's had powered to a win at #3.  Thus, the team match was tied 3-3 going into the final individual match. While senior Zarena Jafry fought valiantly, the St. George's #1 had a few too many shots in her arsenal, and St. George's sealed the victory in three tight games at #1.
