Boys' Varsity Soccer Defeats St. George's 4-1

12/2/2015 1:39:00 PM

The annual fall rivalry between St. George's and Middlesex produced a thrilling match that saw St. George's jump into the early lead and Middlesex fight their way back with a consistent buildup and attack to finish 4-1 for the home side. In the early stages of the match, St. George's was first to 50/50 challenges and played with great heart and intensity.  They were rewarded with a tidy one-time finish for the 1-0 lead from a pinpoint service on the left flank.  The turning point of the match came just two minutes before half time, as Caleb Michalak played a ball over the top of the Dragons' backline and Matt Rhinelander beat the St. George's keeper to the ball and lobbed it into the net from 25 yards out.  The spectacular finish knotted the score at 1-1, and shifted the momentum over to Middlesex. Just five minutes after the interval, Liam Sloan created some space in the box for a shot that trickled across the goal mouth for Jivan Purutyan to fire home.  A very similar goal was scored in the 78th minute when Jacob Charles created the chance and Nick Buonanno buried the close range goal. Gavin Tasker also finished to the side net from the penalty spot after Matt Rhinelander was dragged down in the box in the 70th minute. Senior Tim Baumann stood out for St. George's, as did Purutyan, Rhinelander, Sloan, and Tasker for Middlesex.
