Zebras Battle to 2-2 Draw on Groton Day

10/17/2015 8:30:00 AM

The Zebra derby ended in an even score line, as Groton's efficiency with their scoring chances proved the difference in the 2-2 finish. It took only one shot in the first half for Groton to go ahead 1-0, when Stefano Viacava capitalized on some aggressive play by freshman Mark Bruni on the right wing. His toe poke found the side net in the 12th minute. Middlesex settled the game down and kept the ball for long spells of play until Caleb Michalak was sprung free on the left from a combination of passes. His flat service was met by a bold run from Liam Sloan for the close range finish to knot the score at 1-1 heading into the interval. The second half saw the pressure swing both ways, though Sloan continued to look the most likely to score.  This came to fruition in the 79th minute, as Matt Rhinelander wiggled past two defenders to the byline to find the charging run of Sloan, who scored his second goal of the match with another committed run from midfield. The extra two points were lost just five minutes later, as the Middlesex back line was unable to contain the young and feisty Groton attack. Great credit goes to Groton for their spirit and determination to stay compact and work hard to counterattack. They were rewarded with just six minutes left when Mark Bruni latched on to a service at the top of the box with a first time hit that found the bottom of the crossbar and went into the goal with one of the efficient shots on frame for Groton.  They then went on to hit the crossbar as well, as Middlesex held on for a share of the points.
