Boys' Varsity Soccer Falls to Lawrence, 3-1

10/10/2015 9:58:00 AM

Taken as a whole, this was a growth experience for the Middlesex boys' soccer squad, but the first 30 minutes were regrettable in the end. Middlesex started slowly, and conceded an unusual number of corners due to Lawrence's very direct and athletic style. Just four minutes into the match, from an attacking corner kick, Middlesex had a free header sail over the bar from senior Caleb Michalak. The match turned in a three-minute span, as Lawrence caught Middlesex making two defensive mistakes on the counterattack and took a lightning quick 2-0 lead.

Middlesex made a tactical change after the second goal, in the 28th minute, and began to wrest control of the match away from the Titans.  With a more solid platform in the back, the Middlesex midfield began to control possession and create a slew of golden chances in front of the Lawrence net. The finishing touch, however, was not clinical and the match dragged on with Middlesex managing the long-ball approach and settling the ball on the ground for the next attack. The match drew closer in the 78th minute, as junior Gavin Garrity-Rokous served a ball to the back post where Michalak retrieved it and beat his marker before being hauled down for a penalty kick. Senior captain Gavin Tasker slotted the ball home coolly, and with ten minutes remaining it was 2-1.

The pressure resulted in two more gilt-edged chances for Middlesex to gain a point from the match before a long-ball clearance led to a blocked keeper kick by Lawrence's hard working Max Breiter. The rebound wound up just in front of the Middlesex net for an easy finishing touch in the 88th minute. Middlesex is determined to defend their home ground against Brooks on Saturday and get on the winning side of the results column.
