Middlesex ran well on a hot and challenging course at Brooks. Conditions made for slower than normal times, but spirits were high as Middlesex ran as a team and fared well against Brooks and held their own against defending ISL-champ St. Paul's. The team effort was greatly aided by newly appointed varsity manager Arielmy Morel, injured runners who made the journey, and our fans.
The team effort was led by senior captain Mahal Alvarez-Backus, who ran a tactical race to finish in second place, behind a very fast runner from St. Paul's but ahead of the first place runner from host Brooks. The St. Paul's pack was formidable, however, and the rest of their scoring five finished before the zebra #2. Once Middlesex started coming across the line, they solidified their win over Brooks by placing six Middlesex runners in places 8-13, all ahead of the Brooks second runner. This group was led by junior Sonia Tremblay, and included junior Phoebe Lindsay, senior Alex Schoen, senior captain Madeleine Mullaney, junior Megan Seymour, and junior Emily Arnold (running in her first race).
In the JV scoring, Middlesex was hurt by some last minute injuries and illnesses, but Raphaele Sevrain led the charge for Middlesex, finishing strong against a tough St. Paul's pack. Despite the slow conditions, a few girls posted improvements to their times from last week. Congratulations to Megan Seymour, junior Ericka Ekhator, and sophomore Amelia Danoff for pushing themselves to PRs on the challenging Brooks course. The team looks forward to a good week of training before next week's race at St. Mark's.
