It was a beautiful fall day when Middlesex hosted St. Mark's for its ISL league opener. The Zebras came storming out of the gates from the very first whistle and dominated possession for nearly the entire half. With exceptional team play, Middlesex moved the ball well and was patient building its attack and was tough on defense.
Â
Middlesex thwarted the Lions attack by winning 50/50 balls and shutting down their top player in the midfield. With quick ball movement and dangerous runs up top by Kiara'17, Shannon '16, and Isabelle '17, the Zebras pressured the Lions' goalie, but Middlesex was unable to capitalize on its numerous opportunities.
Â
With confidence and determination, Middlesex took the field in the same manner in the second half. Battling some injuries and fatigue, Middlesex relied on its deep bench to continue its dominance and assault. With about ten minutes left in the game, Maddy '18 nearly netted one through the hands of the St. Mark's keeper off of a fantastic cross by Jack '17. Middlesex pressed on with strong defensive performances by Kate '15, Mary '16, Caroline'17, Mari '16 and Corina'18 to hold off St. Mark's for the remainder of the half.
Â
It was an extraordinary team performance, despite the tie. Middlesex will look to carry this confidence forward against St. Paul's on Tuesday, September 23
rd in Concord N.H. at 3
