Golf Splits with Brooks and Nobles

5/7/2014 8:58:00 AM

If it were won, when 'tis won, then 'twere well, It were won quickly. Yes it is true, fourscore and twenty hours ago, the Middlesex golf team dreamed a dream. They dreamed of defeating a team in honor of Dr. Erickson, who was forced to leave the team's side due to an unfortunate  cycling accident, and they did not disappoint. At the outset, the Middlesex golf team proclaimed, "Give me birdies or give me death," and their demands were answered. Indeed, from Renaissance Golf Club in Haverhill to Concord Country Club in Concord, an iron curtain descended, separating the golf team's past losses from their new spree of wins and halves.

Amy Ding rallied this reborn team before the match, telling the players, "ask not what your golf team can do for you-ask what you can do for your golf team." Many players answered this call, one of whom was Camden Blatchly 15'. In the beginning of the match, there was only Camden and his opponents. The scorecard was without scores and darkness was upon the fairways of the course. But on the first hole, Camden said, "Let there be pars!" and he saw that this was good. And on the second hole, Camden said, "Let there be birdies!" and he saw that this too was good. And on the third hole, Camden said, "Let there be triple bogies!" and he saw that this was not good and he rested. Thus proceeded the up and down match of golfer extraordinaire, Camden Blatchly, who ended up winning one up against Brooks and halving with Nobles.

A strong reply also came from James McGrath, who was often faced with the question, "To birdie, or not to birdie." In the end, James decided that the answer was definitely to birdie, and he went on to win both of his matches.

Amy Ding, only fearing fear itself, went after every pin, and was rewarded with two victories as well. Electra Washburn followed the common golfing phrase, "I birdie therefore I win," and went on to defeat Brooks, but fall to Nobles.

At the end of the day, the wins against Brooks were small victories for Camden, Electra, James, and Amy, but huge triumphs for the Middlesex golf team, who ended up beating Brooks 4-3 and losing to Nobles 2.5-4.5.
