Baseball Edged by Governor's 1-0

5/22/2014 9:35:00 AM

A two-out error in the top of the seventh allowed Governor's Academy to nip Middlesex 1-0 in a pitcher's duel on Wednesday afternoon.
Middlesex starter Ben Cherington allowed only two hits but Governor's righthander Brandon Lopez was even better, throwing a no-hitter to get the win.

Middlesex threatened in the top of the first, as Drew Coash walked, stole second, and took third on a passed ball. Three straight hitters failed to deliver him, however, and Middlesex left runners in scoring position in the third and sixth innings as well.

Cherington retired the first 10 hitters he faced, and had allowed only three baserunners all game before a two out walk and single put runners on first and second in the top of the 7th. Middlesex brought in lefthander Zach Steer, who induced a ground ball which took an unfortunate tough hop to cause the error and plate the go ahead run. Lopez finished off Middlesex 1-2-3 in the last of the 7th to close out the game and his no hitter.

Middlesex will complete the season by hosting traditional rival St.George's on Saturday at 2 pm.
