Boys’ Crew Honors Coach Foster and the Departing Seniors at Last Home Race of the Season

5/19/2014 10:44:00 AM

On an unexpectedly clear and warm Saturday the boys and girls hosted the Pomfret School for the last weekend of regular-season racing.  Before racing began, the Boys' Team took a special moment to recognize Coach Mark Foster's 27 years of coaching by holding a christening ceremony in his honor.  With both the boys and girls teams in attendance, along with a number of alumni from earlier in Mark's career, Mark and his wife, Helena, christened the hull "Helena," named by Mark for his wife.  Mark will be dearly missed in the program next year, but his legacy will always be felt.

In the racing itself, the Middlesex 2nd and 4th boats put together strong pieces against their respective Pomfret crews who made them fight for their wins all the way down the course. They won by 9 and 25 seconds, respectively.  The Middlesex 3rd boat had an uncharacteristically lethargic middle portion of the race, which resulted in the 3 second loss to Pomfret.  Similarly, the first boats had a tight race all the way through the 1,000m mark, at which point Pomfret moved through Middlesex and pushed ahead for a 7 second win, leaving the team split, 2-2 on the day.  All four boys boats have earned strong seeds for the end-of-year NEIRA regatta on Saturday May 24th

As is tradition at the last home race of the season, the boys honored the 9 seniors who are graduating this year.  The 9 boys represent years of dedicated work toward making the team faster, and leave a legacy and culture of hard work and determination for the underclassman to carry on into future years.  All 9 boys will be missed dearly next year, and we wish them well in their next stage of life.
