A more disciplined attacking unit combined with smart defensive play led to a solid Middlesex victory against Rivers on Friday afternoon.
Big Al '14 opened up the scoring in the first minute with a sharp shot to the upper corner. The Zebras had to adjust to a very quick fast-breaking Rivers squad, but they found the right match-ups and one-on-one strategy to fend off the attacks. Four different players posted goals in the first half to take an 8-4 lead over the Red Wings.
In the second half, the Middlesex defense stiffened and denied Rivers a goal until seven minutes remaining in the game. In particular, MadWin '14 played terrific defense, earning an exceptional career high six caused turnovers and Ro '14 nabbed five draw controls. Juliana, TKram, and Cic had strong defensive performances as well. Freshman Shwing got on the board with her first-career assist in the second half, and her classmates Caelin '17 and Rogers '17 also clocked in some valuable minutes. Sophomore Mary made her debut in the attacking unit and earned two caused turnovers on goalie clears.
Middlesex will enjoy a weekend break and then gear up for Barrington High School on Wednesday, April 30th.
