The Middlesex girls' varsity tennis team felt the true meaning of the old adage, what does not kill them, makes them stronger. Having faced such fierce competition early in the season has pushed them to sharpen their skills and tactics, and as a result, they were well-prepared to shut out Lawrence Academy in their match.
Rainy weather pushed the match indoors.
The team started off ready to play and hungry to win. In doubles, seniors Olivia Dewey (captain) and Charlotte Flint were unstoppable with their aggressive net game and smart teamwork; they beat their opponent 8 – 1. With the same set score at #2 doubles, Katie Bull and Abby Myers dominated their competition.
Laura Kaye and Caroline Reynolds at #3 singles had an exciting match. Coming back from being down 5-1, they dug deep and overcame the other team to win 9-7.
Singles had similar success with Olivia (#1) battling out the first set to win 6 – 4 and then exploiting her opponents weakness to win the second set 6 – 1. Charlotte Flint (#2) employed an overall solid game with strong serves to beat her opponent 6 – 0, 6 – 0.
Katie Bull also dug deep to overcome her opponent in the first set of #3 which she won 7 – 5. Having worn out her opponent mentally and physically, she then won the second set 6 – 1.
Abby Myers (#4), Laura Kaye (#5), and Caroline Reynolds (#6) all had commendable matches and solid victories in both sets.
It was a great day for Middlesex girls tennis, and a much needed reminder of the progress made so far this season.
The team will practice once more before facing The Rivers School
on Friday.
