Team Effort Propels Middlesex Past St. Paul's

2/20/2014 9:46:00 AM

Ten different Middlesex basketball players contributed to the scoring campaign against St. Paul's on Wednesday afternoon with Aaron Swenson tallying a team high 17 points. The 65-53 victory was an entire team effort and improves the Zebras'  overall record to 17-4.

Although the score was even for the first eight minutes, Middlesex went on a run and hit a barrage of three pointers to take the 38-30 lead before starting the second half.

Middlesex had a tough time getting going in the second half as St. Paul's battled back to even the game at 42-42 with 10 minutes to go.  The game would go back and forth and was still tied at 52 with 3:41 remaining. However, MX finished the game on a 13-1 run started by an Aaron Swenson feed to Jack Lyne for a layup.  Swenson then stole the ball at the other end and converted on a layup to give MX a four-point lead.  A couple of steals made by Hamza Usman as well as some made free throws continued to extend the lead for the Zebras.  Middlesex put the game away on a beautiful play where Usman generated his third steal of the closing minutes. He got the ball to Austin Dorsey who then found Lyne streaking to the basket. Lyne  then continued the play, converting on a nifty around the back layup to secure the victory.

Siu was second in scoring with 10 points to go with five rebounds. The all around play of Austin Perry was a key factor to the big run in the first half. The Haverhill, MA native finished with six points, a game high six assists, and five rebounds.  Lyne finished with eight points and seven rebounds.  Usman had a team high eight rebounds to go with his key steals. Pete Beatty had four points and five rebounds.

Middlesex will look to pick up their 18th win of the season this Friday as they celebrate seniors Pete Beatty, Hasani Figueroa, Abduolaye Sanogo, co-captain Jon Siu, and co-captain Aaron Swenson on Senior Night versus Concord Academy.
