Entering Friday night's game versus St. Sebastian's, senior point guard Aaron Swenson needed 12 points to reach the 1,000 career-point milestone. And with 4:39 remaining in the first half, he hit that milestone on a typical Swenson play.
On a drive to the net, the Waltham, MA native drew a foul and was awarded a position at the free throw line. After connecting on the foul shot, a horn was sounded and the play was stopped in order to recognize the remarkable achievement of the 5'7" guard. Swenson was then presented with the game ball that he proceeded to give to his parents Adrienne and Daniel Swenson. The three-year starter will be taking his talents to Connecticut College next year.
As for the game, Middlesex jumped out to a 6-0 lead on consecutive three-point shots by the Austins (Perry and Dorsey). And by the end of the half, the Zebras were leading 36-23.
The first eight minutes of the second half were all Sebastian's.The Arrows went on a 17-7 run during that period before Swenson scored three. Swenson then had a steal and layup followed by Hamza Usman and Jon Siu each sinking a three, bringing the score to 54-50 with 5:22 left.
The tense game stayed just out of reach for the visiting team. The final score was 61-46, a huge victory for the Zebras, who had an early season loss to the Arrows in December.
Swenson lead the way with 23 points, six rebounds and six assists. Austin Dorsey had 12 points and four rebounds and Hamza Usman had 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior co-captain Jon Siu returned from his injury to contribute five points and five rebounds.Â
The team now stands at 14-4 and returns to action Tuesday, February 11 when they travel to St. Mark's for a crucial Class B game at 5:00 pm.
