Middlesex Packs the House in Home Opener Capturing Two Wins

12/15/2014 11:47:00 AM

Outstanding and energetic would be the description of the incredible support created by the crowd at the tri-meet attended by Concord Academy, St. Sebastian's, and Middlesex. By contrast, the team was quietly all business racking up win after win, pin after pin.

The first match between Concord Academy and Middlesex ended with the team starting off the 2014 season home record 1-0. The final score (MX 47, Concord Academy 33) was highlighted by a pin by Alex W., who is starting to excel. Also, and perhaps the most exciting, if measured in crowd reaction, was the come from behind pin, by newcomer Naomi. She displayed outstanding mental toughness and it was inspiring to watch her tenacity and perseverance. This was the beginning of a new chapter for Middlesex Wrestling.

Great efforts by Marcus C., Gavin F., and senior Gabe S. put the team on top for good. The action and movement were superb by these three with all around athleticism and melee leading the way. Jivan P. closed out the wrestling with a tough back and forth match, falling short on points in the last period in a very close match.

The two visiting teams wrestled each other as the Middlesex wrestlers scouted the action between St. Seb's and Concord Academy.
Finally, the Middlesex School faced the all boys school of St. Sebastian's and were relentless, not losing a single match. This is quite a feat and perhaps one that, at least for those in attendance, will long remember.

Steven Z. bumped up to heavyweight and pinned his opponent. Naomi, fresh off her first victory, was tenacious to say the least, pinning the St. Seb's athlete in the first period.  Followed by forfeits for Ameya and Emily Y., the team gained momentum. Domination by Gavin F., Gabe S., Jivan P., and then Nick A. at 170 lbs was displayed by technically superior moves to their opponents and all finalized the matches with pins. Khoa P. got on the right track after recent struggles and came away with a hard fought win scoring with repeated takedowns and backpoints.

The wrestler of the match honor was a tough call this competition, especially given that the final score was MX 61 to St. Sebastian's 12 with the only points surrendered due to two forfeits.  The major victory by George M. over an opponent who had narrowly edged him last year was a great victory for the Virginia native and was the best match of the day. Therefore, the wrestler award will be split between Naomi and George, congratulations!
