Second Half Goals Lift Knights Over Zebras in Girls' Soccer

11/6/2014 8:31:00 AM

It was an even battle against the Knights and the Zebras this afternoon. From the very first whistle both teams fought for possession and control of the game. Middlesex was first to get onto the scoreboard when Natalie '15 tenaciously pursued a rebound from a beautiful cross by Shannon '16. It was a fantastic team play with a patient offensive build, switching of the field, and drawing the Knights out of defensive positioning. However, the Knights fought back and pressured Erica '15 in net with some strong scoring opportunities of their own. The Zebras went into halftime up by one.

For the first ten minutes of the second half the Zebras dominated, playing quickly and moving the ball well. Isabelle '17 scored the second goal from a penalty kick after Kiara '17 was taken down in the box. The Zebras were up 2-0. They would soon learn that a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous lead in soccer. The Knights scored their first goal after winning possession from a goal kick. From there, BB&N carried the momentum for the next twelve minutes scoring two more times to go up by one. Middlesex bore down and played with intensity and urgency to secure a third goal. They had several opportunities in the box especially off of well executed direct and corner kicks by Isabelle '17, but the Knights' keeper made excellent saves.

The game was a physical match-up with both teams challenging each other, collisions happening, hard tackles and bodies flying. It was an exciting final ten minutes, but the result was in favor of the Knights. This was a painful loss for the Zebras, but they look to avenge this loss against the mighty St. George's Dragons in the final game of the 2014 season on Friday at 2:00 PM in Newport, RI. Look out Dragons!
