Boys' Varsity Soccer Defeats Roxbury Latin, 3-0

11/1/2014 9:41:00 PM

Middlesex hosted Roxbury Latin under the lights for a 6:30 kickoff.  The weather cooperated well enough for the teams to play 90 wet, cold, and windy minutes of competitive soccer.  RL created a number of decent chances throughout the first half, but the last three minutes of the half proved to be the turning point of the match.

In the 44th minute, Gavin Tasker played a ball behind the RL backline on the right side for Jack Sullivan to run on to and fizz a flat ball across the face of goal for the hard-running James Sanderson to slot home.  With two minutes of stoppage time left to play in the half, Middlesex mounted another attack down the left flank.  Gavin Tasker found some space to loft a ball in front of the net, and Matt Rhinelander rose well to head the ball back into the near side net for the 2-0 halftime advantage.

Just over three minutes after the second half began, James Sanderson wiggled free on the left side and served a ball to the penalty spot for Gavin Tasker to head home for the 3-0 advantage.  Senior defenders Mike Wiggil, Logan Hallowell, Brian Powers, and Kyle Finke helped senior keeper Dan Carlson earn the shutout in their last home match of the season.  The team improves to 10-3-2 on the year, and 9-3-1 in the ISL as they enter the final week of the ISL season.
