Boys' Soccer Tops Brooks, 2-1

10/4/2014 9:00:00 AM

Middlesex earned a valuable three points on the road at Brooks in a high tempo and well played match.  Brooks had the first real chance of the in the 15th minute off of one of their six first half corner kicks, but Jivan Purutyan cleared the resulting shot off of the Middlesex goal line.  Two minutes later, Gavin Tasker set up Mike Wiggill with a great shooting opportunity in the Brooks box that was not taken on frame.

The key moment of the half came when Purutyan found James Sanderson in the Brooks box and he was brought down for a penalty kick.  Brooks keeper Matt Myers made one of his nine saves on the day by denying Gavin Tasker the chance to open the scoring.  The half ended 0-0.

Twelve minutes after the restart, Middlesex's Daniel Parnell took a pass from Mike Wiggill and spun inside, took a set up touch and hammered a 25 yard curling shot with pace beyond the reach of Myers for the 1-0 lead.  Brooks immediately showed the strength of their character by leveling the score within two minutes.  Kevin Herrera capitalized on a weakly headed clearance and struck a low driven ball from 25 yards that snuck just inside the near post.  It was a fantastic response to going down and the match picked up in intensity from that point onwards.  Gavin Tasker stepped up in the closing half hour and created the match winner for Middlesex when he slipped an accurate reverse ball on the floor to an overlapping Jivan Purutyan who settled with his first touch and deposited the ball in the far side net with his second.  Ceasar Adim proved to be a physical force in the final 20 minutes, but Logan Hallowell and Brian Powers did a fine job in preserving the win for Middlesex.
