Girls' Soccer Nets Three in Win Over Thayer

10/27/2014 12:10:00 PM

The sun shone brightly down in Braintree as the Zebras took on the Thayer Tigers. After a tough game day on Wednesday, the Zebras were hungry for their first I.S.L win and they came out fighting.

Thayer scored first on a cross to the weak side post where the Zebras were caught off guard, but despite going down 1-0, the Zebras controlled most of the possession and game. They rallied quickly with an outstanding corner from Isabelle '17 to Shannon '16 who headed the ball into the back of the net. The game was even 1-1.

Middlesex executed a strong team performance all over the field especially with excellent distribution by Lucy '17, Isabelle '17, Shannon '17, Kiara '17 and Mari '16, all of whom were also excellent in winning the 50/50 balls. Middlesex moved the ball well and played quickly but with poise and patience. The Zebras netted their second goal when Isabelle slotted the ball through to Shannon '17 in the box on the far post. The Zebras headed into halftime up by one for the first time all season.

Middlesex continued its strong play in the second half, controlling the possession and continuing to switch the field and find feet up top. Thayer rallied, however, and started to pressure more aggressively. However, the Zebras found the net for their third time when Shannon '16 crossed the ball into Shannon '17 on the back post. The clock wound down, but Thayer was determined to notch another goal and they did with about eight minutes left to go in the half. Both teams continued to fight for possession, but despite some strong play by Thayer in the final minutes, the Zebras were able to hold onto their lead and secure their first I.S.L "W" this season.

It was an outstanding team performance all around. Middlesex will use this momentum to prepare for Exeter on Wednesday in New Hampshire at 2:45 PM.
