The wrestling team traveled to the "Frozen North" to Concord, NH to take on ISL rivals St. Paul's and St. Marks on Wednesday afternoon.Although short a few wrestlers (but not short on "will power") Middlesex overcame sickness, an introuvable athlete and a barely missed weigh-in to beat St. Marks 43-24 in their opening match.
Captain Tae Hwan Son got the ball rolling for Middlesex with a pin while Gabe Smith jumped to a five-point lead in his match before pinning his opponent to add to the overall team score. In addition, Gavin Fujimori added a major decision by defeating his opponent 8-0. However, the scoring during his match had to be video reviewed to confirm a quick signal for a technical violation resulting in one point for Gavin. While the match was not stopped (as is typical) the position is allowed to continue if the bottom wrestler is potentially able to score. Several scorers watching the match were correct in rewarding Gavin the final major 8-0 (nice job Sebastian Biber).
Rounding out the scoring for Middlesex, Andrew Zhang toughed out a close match and as a result came up with an 8-6 victory. Nick Agee, George Morris and Alex Wagner all added first-period pins to contribute to the team win.
In their second match against St. Paul's, the results were not as positive as the Zebras would have liked. And although Gavin Fujimori got the team off to an excellent start with a 9-1 victory, it was not enough to sustain them.
After Fujimori's victory, the next four matches did not go as well, as the team dropped decisions in the following weight classes: 145lbs, 152lbs, 160lbs, and 170lbs. A forfeit at 182lbs seemed to ice the night with a score too high to climb.
George Morris secured a 1-0 match at 195lbs to stop the slide, but the team had experienced the sharp highs and lows of competition all in one night. However, the tough 65-7 loss to the deep St. Paul's team left the wrestlers more determined to improve in their next match against Thayer on Saturday.
On the way home, the group celebrated the birthday of teammate Chris Insinga. The birthday song was performed and yes, even those watching their weight enjoyed some birthday cake.
