The wrestling team was near perfect over the weekend visiting Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, MA for a league tri-meet. Both Governors Academy and BBN were uncharacteristically low in team numbers and as a result forfeited a multiple of weight classes.
Against Governors, the team won all six matches contested, netting four pins. Leading the way for Middlesex was Senior Captain Tae Hwan Son who earned the major decision by defeating his opponent 10-2. This same opponent beat Tae last year by a score of 11-3, making his defeat even more impressive! Following this opening match the momentum continued with Gabe Smith who controlled his opponent from start to finish with a third period pin to end the match victorious. In similar fashion to Gabe, Jivan Purutyan added his say at one minute thirty-seven seconds into the match with a decisive pin. Gavin Fujimori left no doubt to the outcome at 145 lbs, by taking the 9-0 score in the second period and finalizing it with an exclamatory pin half way through the third period. At 152 lbs, Captain Jordan Phinney put all distractions aside and took a working man approach to win a 9-3 victory. Finally, the closing match at 195 lbs, was a quick and decisive pin for George Morris, who seems to get stronger in his sleep. Every day, he and the team are getting quicker, stronger and more skilled.
Congratulations on the first ever shutout with a score of Middlesex 66 Governor's 0.
Following the victory over Governors Academy, Middlesex wrestled BBN for the final match of the day. With a skeleton crew representing the home team (BBN), very few matches were wrestled making the final score Middlesex 60 BBN 12
Wins were posted by Gavin Fujimori at 145 lbs and Nick Agee at 170lbs, who mastered his opponent with a quick pin.
Middlesex only suffered two losses the entire day. In the 138lbs weight class, the BBN senior captain proved to be too much for sophomore Jivan Purutyan. Both wrestlers exhibited strength but the likely New England caliber wrestler from BBN wrestled well to win the match. The other loss was a close match at 160lbs between a senior from BBN and sophomore Andrew Zhang. With the team momentum strongly in favor of Middlesex, it was a bravely-fought match between the hometown senior and the much improved Middlesex "grappler". With less than a minute remaining, the opponent secured the pin. However, a good match with a lot of skills to discuss in the coming practices.
An Undeniably Middlesex Wrestling Victory Day
Next up, the wrestlers travel to Worcester Academy on Wednesday, January 15 for a 3:30pm match.
