Middlesex hosted their first home game of the season when perennial powerhouse Phillips Andover came to town. The Big Blue got on the scoreboard early, capitalizing on a defensive breakdown two minutes into the first half. But Middlesex rallied and worked to regain possession and composure as the rest of the first half saw offensive chances for both teams. Erica '15 was powerful in net coming up with important saves to keep the score at 1-0 into the half.
Middlesex regrouped at halftime and committed once again to its signature team-oriented style of play. Their efforts paid off with Middlesex executing the game plan with precision, discipline, energy, and determination. The Zebras dominated possession the second half and peppered the Andover goalie with dangerous crosses, shots and corner kicks into the box. The back four, Lucy '17, Caroline '17, Mary '16, and Kate '15 were impenetrable and their combinations out of the back with Mari '16 and Dakota '14 were keys to the offensive attack. Natalie '15, Shannon '16, Isabel '17, and Irene '14 were dynamic and dangerous in the final third, playing with patience and maintaining our offensive shape. As the whistle blew signaling the end of 80 minutes of soccer, Middlesex was clearly carrying the momentum and had control of the game.
Although their hard work didn't show on the scoreboard, it bodes well for a tough fight against a league rival, St. Mark's, under the lights in Southborough on Saturday.
