Girls' JV Volleyball Wins First Game of Season

9/20/2013 10:26:00 AM

On Wednesday, September 18, 2013 the Middlesex girls' volleyball squad traveled down to Milton Academy to play in the school's first ever volleyball contest. In an entertaining and competitive match, Middlesex emerged victorious winning 2-1 (25-13, 13-25, 25-17).

After a strong start in the first set, this young team found themselves struggling with a challenging Milton serve in the second set. However, the girls rallied around each other and eventually found their rhythm again. While the score of this second set looked lopsided, the team ended the set playing well, and the players felt confident in their abilities and hungry to prove themselves in the third. The team rebounded magnificently in this deciding set with some brilliant hustle plays and big spikes to close out the win. The final whistle brought scenes of euphoria as the girls celebrated the first volleyball win in Middlesex School history.

The Middlesex victory would not have been possible without the efforts of every member of the team, the players deserve credit for their spirited play and camaraderie: The strong serving of the entire team and Rose-Marie Fuchs '15 (7 aces) and Lily Renneker '17(8 aces) in particular tilted the contest in the Zebras' favor.  Abby Meyers '16 and Sarah Ong '16 excelled in the setting position, while Pauline Santry '17 and Lydia Paddock '17 intimidated at the net. Substitutes Kaylie Joo '16, Christina Sotirescu '16, and Ariana Odom '17 filled in to provide defensive relief, and Alyssa McNally '16 finished off the game with a decisive kill.

The coaches are proud of all the girls and excited to finally get the season underway. The outlook for the season is positive, and we will be looking to improve on our consistency and other areas of difficulty in the next few days. Next week we travel to Governor's Academy on Wednesday and BB&N on Friday hoping to continue our winning ways.
