On a beautiful fall afternoon the Middlesex Zebras traveled to Pomfret, CT to take on the mighty Griffins. The first half saw an evenly matched game with both sides creating dangerous scoring opportunities and making big defensive plays. Erica '15 was tough in net thwarting Pomfret's opportunities to get onto the scoreboard. Our young, but feisty backline was resilient and thus we went into halftime 0-0.
With a review of our shape and a discussion of our offensive movement, the Zebras exploded onto the field with discipline, determination, and a commitment to our team concept. Captain Irene '14 was dominant out on the wing and was able to put the Griffins back on their heals as Middlesex maintained possession for the first 15 minutes. However, the Griffins rallied back and were able to net their first goal off of a corner kick to go up by one goal. With 25 minutes left in the half, Middlesex pulled together to battle back. However, the Griffins capitalized on a rebound inside the six yard box to go up by two goals. Middlesex showed their strong character and regained possession and attacked Pomfret's back four and strong goalkeeper. Mary '16 hit the inside of the crossbar off of a corner, but it was a close call by the referees to keep the score at 2-0. Five minutes later, Natalie '15 tapped a rebound in beyond the Pomfret keeper, but she was called offsides, keeping the score at 2-0. Again, Middlesex showed its true colors by fighting harder and was finally able to get a goal with one minute left in the game when Natalie '15 deflected a cross into the back of the net.
It was an exciting game and second half. Middlesex will carry this momentum, resilience, team-oriented style of play into Wednesday's home match against Andover at 3:15pm.
