Freshman third baseman Kai Long slapped a two run single through a drawn in infield to provide Middlesex with a 6-5 walkoff win over Roxbury Latin on Wednesday. The win improved their record to 3-7.
The outlook was not brilliant for the Zebra nine after Roxbury Latin scored four first inning runs and Middlesex was retired in order through the first three innings. However, starting pitcher Zach Steer settled down and kept Roxbury Latin off the scoreboard and allowed Middlesex to stay in the game.
After three straight walks, Max Novick singled in two runs in the bottom of the fifth and Steer delivered another with a sac fly to make the score 4-3. The Zebras tied the score in the last of the sixth on a ground out by Nick Widen.
Roxbury Latin scored a run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. However, a single by Drew Coash, a walk to Aaron Swenson and a single by Brendon Canavan loaded the bases with none out in the last of the seventh. After a strikeout, Long delivered the winning blow on the first pitch he saw.
Middlesex returns to action next Monday against BB&N.
