Belmont Hill Edges Past Middlesex

5/20/2013 10:33:00 AM

Belmont Hill scored two runs in the last of the seventh on Saturday to thwart the upset bid of Middlesex and remain tied for first in the ISL with a 7-6 victory.
Middlesex started tri-captain Nick Widen on the mound and he pitched brilliantly, allowing just two earned runs on the day. Widen walked just one and struck out seven. The Zebras were hurt by four errors, leading to five unearned runs on the afternoon.
Middlesex fell behind 3-0 after one inning, thanks to three errors. Widen settled down, however, and the Middlesex offense chipped away against Belmont Hill star Keelan Smithers. The score was 3-2 after four innings when the Middlesex bats exploded for three runs to take a -3 lead. Belmont Hill immediately tied things up in the last of the fifth, again thanks in part to a defensive miscue.
With the score tied in the top of the seventh, Aaron Swenson singled, stole second, and scored on Brendon Canavan's single. The Hillies battled back, however, with three singles tying the score and a wild pitch providing the winning margin.
Widen and Drew Coash had two hits apiece for Middlesex and Canavan and Nick Zaffiro each knocked in two runs. Middlesex will wrap p its season by travling to Governor's and St. George's this week
