Middlesex Outlasts Nobles 9-7

4/22/2013 9:07:00 PM

The Middlesex baseball team outlasted Nobles 9-7 in a wild ISL  game on Monday, April 22. The win improved the Zebra's record to 2-3.
Nobles jumped ahead early, plating three unearned runs in the top of the 1st inning for a 3-0 lead. Middlesex responded right away, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first. The biggest blow was a two out, two run single by tri-captain Nick Widen.
After Nobles tied the score in the second, Widen was involved again in the next Middlesex run as he stroked a single to left and advanced two bases on a mad dash to third after an outfield error. He later scored the go ahead run on Zach Steer's infield single.
Joe Frye led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and after two Nobles errors, Nick Zaffiro plated a run with a single to make the score 6-4. The Zebras seemingly broke it open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, which was highlighted by a two run triple by Brendon Canavan.
Nobles would not go quietly, however, as the Bulldogs finally solved freshman righthander Kai Long in the sixth, scoring two runs and loading the bases before Joe Frye recorded a strikeout to get out of a huge jam.  Zach Steer came on to pitch the seventh and again Nobles threatened, sending the go ahead run to the plate until Steer induced a 3-1 groundout that ended the game.
It was a true team effort for Middlesex, as Canavan, Frye, Widen, and Long all recorded multiple hits. The Zebras also used four pitchers, with Kai Long earning his first varsity win with 3 1/3 innings of stellar relief. He allowed two hits and struck out four while allowing one earned run. Zach Steer picked up his first career save.
Middlesex returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Lawrence at 4:00.
