The Middlesex baseball team trailed 7-0 early on in their game against Thayer Academy and eventually fell to the Tigers 10-7 in ISL baseball action on Saturday. The loss drops the Zebras' record to 1-3.
Freshman Kai Long started on the mound for Middlesex and Thayer posted single runs in the first and third innings for a 2-0 lead. After a popout to open the fourth, Thayer loaded the bases, prompting Middlesex to bring in reliever Joe Frye. Frye struck out the first batter he faced and induced a ground ball from the next but an error prevented Middlesex from escaping the inning. After a triple and a single, Thayer was up 7-0 and in complete control.
To their credit, Middlesex battled back, scoring three runs in their half of the fourth, highlighted by RBI singles by Frye and Drew Coash. The Zebras added a run in the fifth on a double by Max Novick and an RBI single from Zach Steer. Thayer pulled away again in the sixth after the first three batters of the inning walked but Middlesex again battled back, as Max Novick doubled home two runs in the last of the sixth to make the score 10-6. Middlesex scored a single run in the last of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate but the rally came up short.
Middlesex will play Nobles on April 22 in a makeup game of an earlier rain out. First pitch is at 4:45.
