Milton Academy used infield singles to plate single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to break a 2-2 tie and beat Middlesex in ISL baseball action on Wednesday. The loss dropped the Zebras to 1-2 on the season.
Middlesex jumped on top early as Drew Coash and Aaron Swenson hit back- to- back doubles for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, after a walk to Brendon Canavan, the Mustangs recorded three consecutive strikeouts to end the threat. Milton got the run back without a hit in the bottom of the first, as a walk, stolen base, throwing error, and sacrifice fly brought the tying run around.
Middlesex went back on top 2-1 in the top of the third on a two out single by Nick Widen. Again, the lead did not last long as Milton tied the score with a two out hit of their own in the last of the third.
Milton received some terrific defensive play from their outfield, as both Coash and Widen were robbed of hits in the game's middle innings. The Mustangs' speed on the bases allowed them to beat out several infield hits that provided them with the winning margin.
Sophomore lefthander Zach Steer went the distance for Middlesex, allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven.
Middlesex returns to action on Saturday when they host Thayer at 2:00 pm.
