Girls' Varsity Basketball Outlasted by St. George's

2/25/2013 9:53:00 AM

As it was the last home game of the season, it was "Senior Day," a chance to honor and celebrate the contribution of the seniors to the basketball program.   Between the three seniors, Sara Kate Read, Kassiani  Nacopolous, and Clare Lyne they served nine seasons on the varsity squad setting a high standard of unflappable attitude and relentless effort.  Their absence will be felt.

The Middlesex girls' basketball team lost to archrival St. George’s 45-31 in a tightly contested game.  The game was hard fought the entire way, each team battling with intensity.  St. George’s got out to an 8-0 lead and never relinquished it.  Middlesex made several spirited charges throughout the game but were unable to get the Dragons' lead below eight.  The Zebras were able to generate turnovers, however, too  frequently they gave the ball back due to rushed execution.

Senior captains Clare Lyne and Kassiani Nacropolous were stalwarts on defense allowing no easy baskets while the freshman “young guns” Hannah Saghir and Ericka Ekhator led the scoring charge with 10 and eight points respectively.   Sophomore point guard Kathryn Barry helped to contain their ball handlers while adding five points to the team total.  Though the game was a loss, the team competed with pride for the full 32 minutes.
