Boys' Varsity Hockey Continues Winning Ways

2/22/2013 9:00:00 AM

The boys’ varsity hockey team posted a 5-3 victory at Groton on Wednesday, February 20, improving their record to 15-5-4 and earning a season sweep of their local opponent.  With two games remaining, the Zebras are within striking distance of earning an invitation to the New England Prep School playoffs and a possible share of the Eberhart League Championship.

Middlesex found themselves down by a goal at the end of the first period. Junior Sammy Muse knotted the game at one with an early 2nd period power play goal however, assisted by fellow class mates Mike Menter and Ben Franks. Although  Groton reclaimed the lead on a power play goal of their own moments later,  senior Chris Jellison quickly countered with a rebound goal coming off of the stick of junior Sam Carlin with senior Billy Olson igniting the play with a D to D pass to Carlin.  It was Franks who captured the lead before the period came to a close by intercepting an errant Groton pass at the blue line. He then took off down the ice and skated in on Groton’s net minder, beating him glove side.

Groton came into the third with determination, quickly knotting the game at three apiece.  With MX on the power play, senior Will Kreitler won the offensive zone draw back to junior Justin Ferriera who roofed a snap shot for the lead and eventual the game winner.  Kreitler added an insurance goal with less than a minute remaining in the game by potting an empty netter, assisted by Menter and senior captain AJ Lucchese.

Freshman goalie Derek Goguen was the difference maker in today’s game having to face 20 shots in the first period.  Gogy had a big day making 40 save on 43 shots.

The team will battle for a share of 1st place in the Eberhart League this evening when they take on large school foe BB&N at Middlesex. Puck drops at 5:00pm.
