Thirds Basketball Falls to Groton in Final Game of Season

2/20/2013 10:30:00 AM

Despite the heroics of the team's play, Middlesex fell to Groton yesterday 43 - 39. Groton jumped out to an impressive lead as Middlesex remained committed to playing everyone the last game of the season. At the half, Groton lead 24 - 11. Coach Smith told the team, "The game is NOT over. This is the type of game you crawl back into because teams rarely hold onto large leads". With a tightening of the rotation, more inspired play, a full court press and Middlesex finally hitting shots, the team outscored Groton 28 - 15 in the second half, tying the game up and sending the affair to overtime. During that second half run, D. Wong hit 4 three pointers and J. Dichter scored 8 points. The lights out shooting combined with the defensive pressure, especially from W. Sereeyothin and M. Petrie, brought us back. During the overtime period, slight changes to Groton's defensive alignment threw us off, and though our play was still good, we didn't make the shots. In the end, Groton pulled out the victory, 43 - 39. All in all, this game, the boys last of the season, was their best game and that's all we can ask for. This team got better during the year which is truly the goal of team sport: no matter the record, does the team improve and get better. This team has. I am very proud of the group for sticking to it all season and for their inspired play down the stretch. M. Petrie played his best game overall in his career and finished with 9 point. D. Wong and J. Dichter both finished with 12 points each. T. Wing and M. Phillips played significant minutes today.
