Boys' Varsity Hockey Earns Sweep of Rivers, 2-1

2/18/2013 2:00:00 PM

The boys' varsity hockey team hosted the Rivers School Saturday afternoon and posted a 2-1 victory.  The hard-earned win was only the second league loss for a talented Rivers squad, both at the hands of Middlesex.

After falling behind by a goal, the boys tied the game at 1 – 1 on a 2nd period power play goal coming off a tip-in by senior forward Will Kreitler off of a blast from the point made by classmate Chris Jellison.  The Zebras got the eventual game winner late in the 2nd period off of a terrific combination goal when senior Billy Olson found Jellison on the breakout, who smartly skated the puck through the neutral zone and made a wide drive into the offensive zone.  With senior captain AJ Lucchese breaking into the zone, Jelly delivered a back diagonal to his linemate Lucchese who collected the pass above the face off circle and snapped the game winner past Rivers' sophomore goalie.

The team played terrific defense throughout the remainder of the game with significant contributions from junior Mike Menter, sophomores Harrison Markel and Sam Carlin as well as freshman goalie Derek Goguen.

Middlesex is battling for an Eberhart League Championship which will require winning their final three games of the season vs. Groton, BB&N and St. George’s.  The team's record currently stands at 14 - 5 - 4.
