The final midweek ISL tilt proved that there is only one statistic that matters at the end of a match, and that the score board does not always reflect the flow of play, or justly reward an otherwise excellent performance. And although the Zebras turned in a fantastic performance, it was BB&N that ultimately came away with the 1-0 win.
BB&N picked up their 11
th ISL win of the season and proved to be a talented opponent. The first half was very even-which magnified the disappointment for Middlesex at trailing 1-0 at the interval. In the 22
nd minute, BB&N's Jamar Noble scored a very unorthodox winner. After a weakly struck corner kick rebounded back to the corner taker, a flat and pacy ball was played along the floor to Noble who lunged at it to get an off balance shot on goal. After Middlesex keeper Dan Carlson made the initial save, both Noble and Carlson wound up on the ground. From that position, the BB&N striker managed to swing his leg at the loose ball six yards away from the goal line and get just enough purchase on his attempt to pop it over the Middlesex keeper and over the line. Middlesex was organized and effective at moving the ball from the back through the midfield and applied consistent pressure to the BB&N back line.
After the halftime break, Middlesex put forth one of its most dominant performances of the season, as the ball was consistently in the attacking half and was worked at a high tempo from the middle of the field to the width. Despite a critical moment when Middlesex freshman James Sanderson was forcefully taken down in the penalty area, the opportunity to tie the score at one did not materialize. Middlesex pressed and fought hard to the final whistle and the solace of a dominant performance proved no real tonic for the cruel result.
The team will gear up for their final home game against St. Georges on Saturday, November 9 at 2:00pm.
