The Middlesex boys' varsity soccer team lost a heartbreaking game at Roxbury Latin by surrendering a goal right at the stroke of 90 minutes. Junior keeper Dan Carlson was the man of the match, as he made a point blank one-on-one save in just the second minute of the contest and then again by making a fantastic penalty save in the 55
th minute to the top right corner of the goal to preserve the 0-0 score line. Sophomore Matt Rhinelander had the first great scoring chance when he was unmarked at the back post for Stevie Gleason's cross, but his first touch went into pressure and his shot was rushed to the outside of the near post.
The second half was back and forth on the bumpy and uneven RL pitch and two good chances were created by Middlesex, but neither had the end result they were seeking. In the 60
th minute, freshman James Sanderson worked hard to win the ball and beat his marker to the end line and he cut the ball back to the penalty spot for Alex Rego whose toe poked shot went straight to the RL keeper. Then in the 73
rd minute, junior Julian Bishop was sprung down the left side of the defense as he found an unmarked Gavin Tasker who lost his footing right before he could launch his attempt at goal. With the final whistle looming in the 90
th minute, RL found their #10 on the left side of the penalty area and his first touch sealed off the defender while his second touch rifled the ball into the side net at the back post for the 1-0 win. It was a harsh result for the hard work put in by the Middlesex squad and particularly for the fantastic play of keeper Dan Carlson.
Middlesex will look to rebound when they host BBN on Wednesday for their second to last ISL game of the season at 2:30pm.
