Girls' Cross Country Triumphs on Home Course

10/7/2013 7:02:00 AM

The Middlesex girls had a terrific day of cross country on our home course on Saturday, October 5.  In our first "girls only" race of the season, the team took advantage of having the spotlight to put on a strong showing as they hosted and defeated Rivers, St. Mark's, and Tabor.

Mahal Alvarez-Backus won her second race of the season in a new school record for our home course, pacing the field from start to finish.  The strength of the team was evident in our varsity pack of seniors, with Nell Gallogy (5th), Talya Kramer (6th), Rowena Schenck (8th), and Susie Frechter (10th) working together throughout the course to finish ahead of the third runners from St. Mark's, Rivers, and Tabor. The varsity score was further solidified by sophomore Phoebe Lindsay and junior Alex Schoen, who ran with confidence and poise to score displacement points against the third runners from Rivers and St. Mark's. We also saw the triumphant return of Sonia Tremblay, the first race of the season from runner-turned manager-turned runner Bettina Lichauco, Thai scholar Polly Meesuwandecha's first American athletic event, and great improvements in the middle of the JV pack, most notably from Michelle Chung and Zarena Jafry.

The team looks forward to another week of training before our annual traditional Friday dual meet against the other Zebras of Groton.
