The skies cleared in time for a tough battle between the Zebras and the Lions on Wednesday afternoon in Concord, MA.
At the outset of the first half, Exeter carried the momentum pressing offensively, but the Zebras came roaring back and started to reclaim possession and execute its team oriented system. Middlesex patiently built its offensive up the field with quick ball movement out of the back. Midway through the half, Shannon '16 was able to beat her defender on a well played through ball and slide it across the goal box to Natalie '15 crashing in on net. Natalie slipped the ball beyond the Lion goalkeeper, however, the goal was called back because the ball was ruled out of bounds before being crossed. Nonetheless, this goal gave the Zebras confidence and they continued their press. It was Exeter however, who was able to get on the scoreboard first after a defensive breakdown thus sending the Zebras into halftime down by one.
Middlesex came out with confidence and determination in the second half. Despite some physical battles in the air and in the midfield, the Zebras evened the score when Isabelle '17 ripped a shot into the top ninety from an outstanding ball by Dakota '14. The Lions came roaring back however, and answered with a goal of their own to take the lead again. Middlesex dug deep and continued its fight. The Zebras committed to their team shape and once again Natalie '15 tapped a ball past the Exeter goalie from another dangerous cross by Shannon '16. The game remained tied until the last five minutes when for the third time Natalie '15 deflected another cross from Shannon '16 to put the Zebras on top. As the clock wound down, Exeter pushed for their tying goal, but the Zebra defense stayed strong and proved impenetrable. The final whistle blew and Middlesex secured another outstanding team win.
The Zebras will carry this momentum into another tough I.S. L match-up on Wednesday, November 6
th at BB&N at 4:15pm.
