Boys' Varsity Soccer Draws a 1-1 Tie with Lawrence

10/3/2013 9:26:00 AM

The Middlesex boys' varsity soccer team got a huge point on the road this Wednesday at Lawrence Academy, as they battled back from a 0-1 halftime deficit to draw 1-1tie in the end.

The first half was a very competitive affair, and Lawrence broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when their Venezuelan midfielder hit a rolling shot that found its way through a crowd and into the left side of the net.  Just five minutes later, Lawrence had a scoring chance on a corner kick cleared off the goal line by Middlesex sophomore Jivan Purutyan.

Middlesex came back from the halftime interval with a renewed sense of purpose and put immediate pressure on Lawrence to take control of the midfield.  The Middlesex pressure was rewarded just ten minutes into the second half as Purutyan pressured a ball on the right side that wound up at the feet of freshman James Sanderson. Sanderson proceeded to dribble past two defenders to the byline to draw the keeper out of position before slotting the ball back to the penalty spot for a thankful Middlesex sophomore Gavin Tasker who slotted it home to knot the score at 1-1. Middlesex keeper Dan Carlson made four unbelievable saves to preserve the result and Lawrence also headed the ball off the crossbar in the 83rd minute and Purutyan cleared another ball off of the goal line in the 67th minute.  The midfield marking and work rate of senior captain Teddy Rausch and junior Alex Rego was the key to the result for the Zebras.  As the final whistle went Middlesex held their heads high after having shown a great deal of resiliency and character to get a vital point on the road.

Next up is Brooks at home on Saturday at 3pm as Middlesex looks to continue its positive momentum.
