A fast paced and exciting second half somehow did not yield a deciding goal, as Middlesex and Thayer played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon in Concord, MA.
Thayer started out by taking the initiative in the first 20 minutes as the Middlesex back line uncharacteristically gave some great chances to the away side. The game was kept in hand in this stretch by Middlesex keeper Dan Carlson, who made two top drawer saves on the ever-dangerous Adam Cowie-Haskell for Thayer. Cowie-Haskell broke the deadlock in the 25
th minute as he raced on to a ball that was sprung behind the back line and took a touch to round Carlson and calmly pass home the first tally. Within a few minutes Middlesex had knotted the score, as freshman James Sanderson buried a loose ball off of a corner kick off of the bottom of the crossbar and down just over the line. Middlesex turned the pressure up in the last 15 minutes of the half, as freshman Liam Sloan hit a 25 yard volley off of the crossbar and senior Sean Pensavalle had a shot tipped on to the left post by Colin Cramer in the Thayer net.Â
After the 1-1 halftime score line, it really looked like the game would open up and Middlesex played some of their best possession and buildup play of the season in the Thayer half of the field but just could not find the finishing touch. Christopher Beaulieu put in a praiseworthy shift for the Tigers, as he organized the backline and came to the rescue on multiple occasions. Cowie-Haskell was always a threat on the clearance and counter attack, and Cramer made big saves on second half chances by Middlesex's Gavin Tasker and Stevie Gleason to preserve the draw.
