The girls' volleyball team extended their winning streak to five games after defeating a talented Thayer squad 3-2 (21-25, 25-9, 25-18, 22-25, 15-10). The loyal Middlesex fans were treated to an exciting back-and-forth contest filled with some stellar volleyball play from both teams.
Middlesex began the game sluggishly and struggled with their serve receive in the first set and consequently quickly found themselves losing by ten points. However, the team rallied to close the gap and once again ended the set more confident in their abilities despite losing the set. Their desire to prove themselves was on full display in the second set as perfect passes led to perfect sets that produced excellent hits. The Zebras won the following two sets in commanding fashion.
Thayer fought back and continued to improve as well. The fourth set saw several lead changes with Thayer finally emerging victorious and forcing a fifth deciding set to break the tie. The Middlesex players exhibited mental toughness and were able to refocus their efforts in this set as they were able to close out the win 15-10.
The coaches were particularly pleased with the improved passing and serving in this game (over 80% serving accuracy as a team). Maile Cowell '17 and Sarah Ong '16 led the team with over 70 percent passing accuracy while Maile and Christina Sotirescu '17 led the team in serving. Rose Marie Fuchs '15, Lydia Paddock '17, and Lily Renneker '17 continued to be an intimidating force at the net with their spikes and blocks.
The coaches were also proud of the players' resilience and fortitude as they fought back twice after losing close sets. This was a character building experience for all involved players, and we all look forward to the remaining half of the season with optimism.
