It was a battle between the Zebras on Friday as Middlesex traveled to their perennial rival, Groton.
Middlesex got off to a strong start executing a disciplined team game, but about 10:00 into the game, senior captain Irene '14 went down with a knee injury. As the team adjusted to her absence on the field, Mary '16 also succumbed to a leg injury leaving the Demoulas sisters sidelined. Despite these injuries, Middlesex continued to battle for possession and attacked Groton's net, but were unable to capitalize on some strong offensive chances. Shannon '17, who stepped up well to fill Irene's position, nearly knocked one in as she crashed the far post. Nonetheless, Middlesex gave up a goal on another defensive breakdown as Groton's quick transition caught the Concord Zebras on their heels. Groton was able to get another goal a short while later to go into the half up by two.
The halftime afforded Middlesex some much needed time to regroup, refocus, and to channel their determination effectively against their opponent. Middlesex, however, struggled to keep their patience as the clock wound its way down and as such, Groton took advantage of Middlesex's offensive press to put in their third and final goal of the day.
Despite the score, Middlesex continues to improve as they work towards putting together the complete team game. The girls will take the weekend to rest, but will be back to work on Tuesday to gear up for a home game against Dana Hall on Wednesday, October 16
