After falling behind 1 – 0 in the first period at Pingree on Saturday, January 12 the Middlesex boys' varsity hockey team exploded for eight goals in the final two periods to take home the decisive victory.
In the second period, senior captain AJ Lucchese took charge and opened the floodgates on a one time shot that broke through the Pingree goalie’s pads. He then added a second goal soon later on a nice wrist shot from the left side on the power play.
The third period was all Middlesex as they scored three power play goals. Sophomore Eric Shaw slid a rebound shot in for his first of two goals at the 2:19 mark to extend the lead to 3-1. Minutes later, Sam Muse tallied his first of the year from the right side of the net on a 5 on 3 power play. Middlesex struck again when senior Billy Olson scored another power play goal on a fine shot from the point that glanced in off the left post. Eric Shaw then scored his second of the period after Sam Muse made a mid air deflection off a Mike Menter point shot that gave Shaw the chance to deposit the puck in a wide open net.The nicest goal of the day came at the 13:19 mark when AJ Lucchese made a terrific pass to the back side of the net to a breaking Justin Ferreira who redirected it behind the Pingree goaltender. Sam Carlin ended the scoring campaign on a solo rush going end- to-end and finishing with a “top shelf” shot to increase the deficit to 8-1.
Middlesex will host Roxbury Latin on Wednesday, January 16 in the next Eberhart contest. The puck drops at 3:30pm.
