The Boys’ and Girls’ crew teams hosted their last races of the season at the Paumgarten Boathouse, which was in full swing with rowers, parents, and alumni who were visiting for the weekend.
The day started out with the Middlesex 5th boat showing their stuff with a 19 second victory over Pomfret. It was the 5th boat’s first time on the Concord River course, and the rowers and coxswain handled it with poise. Middlesex and Pomfret’s 4th boats were tight down the course for the first 1/3rd of the race, when Pomfret started to slowly pull away, finishing with a 14 second win over Middlesex.
Similar to the Brooks/Nobles race, 2nd and 3rdboats had strong starts off the line, but within 500 meters were lagging on the competition, and neither found their rhythm, losing by 12 and 16 seconds, respectively.
The day finished with the crowd on the bridge cheering on the Middlesex and Pomfret 1st boats, who were neck and neck down the entire course. With about 350meters to go, Pomfret’s early sprinting strokes gained them a couple of seats, but a quick Middlesex response, and then some determined rowing through the finish line resulted in the 1 second Middlesex win.
Thanks to Pomfret for a great day of racing.
