The Middlesex Zebras opened their season against Class A rival Andover in their turf stadium. Typical of an early season game, the play was back and forth with several turnovers by both teams.
Middlesex was on defense for much of the first minutes of play and despite solid collapses and commnuication, the Andover team was awarded two free positions due to Zebra blocking errors. The Big Blue capitalized on both shots taking a 2-0 lead with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. The Zebra attacks finally settled in and found the back of the net three times in the next three minutes to grab a 3-2 lead, but Andover tied it up on yet another free position goal. Hadley '12 found the back of the cage after a long drought by both teams, but Andover found themselves on the free position line once again and tied it up with 3:33 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, the Zebras adjusted appropriately and scored three solid goals despite several turnovers. Although the defensive unit adjusted to the calls in the first half, Andover earned one last free position to score their one goal of the half with 10:24 remaining. With a score of 7-5, Middlesex took time off the clock after a successful draw control and scored one last goal off an error to gain an 8-5 advantage. The Zebras took control once again on the draw and held the ball for the final 1:11 for the 8-5 win.
Jeanie '13 anchored the defense with help from a new defensive unit of juniors and sophomore, and six players scored on the eight goals, demonstrating both unselfish and strong play from each member of the attacking unit.
