Girls' Varsity Basketball Places Second at Berwick Holiday Tournament

Middlesex was able to pull out a thrilling double over-time victory in the first round of the Berwick Clash holiday tournament against a strong Pingree squad.  A back and forth battle the entire way, Middlesex's defense was able to get a few stops towards the end of the game as the possessions became more precious.  The defensive effort was led by captains Clare Lyne and Kassiani Nacopoulos, who seemed always to be in the correct position to protect the basket and help their teammates. Sophomore Jenna Doherty provided our offense in the overtime periods as she scored 7 of her 10 points in the extra time.  Freshman Ericka Ekhator and junior Charlotte Silk chipped in 8 and 5 points respectively and helped control the boards.  Sophomore Claire Miller was a pest as an on-ball defender.  With eight different players scoring and all contributing in team spirit, it was a terrific way to capture our first win of the season.

In the championship game of the Berwick Clash Tournament, Berwick jumped out early on Middlesex and was able to maintain an 8 to 10 point lead throughout the game.  Middlesex was unable to adjust to the full court pressure applied by Berwick and throughout the game turned the ball over.  Several missed layups and putbacks, as well as shooting 50% (15-30) from the free throw line, tell a story of missed opportunities. However, the effort was high and Middlesex never surrendered.  Freshman Ericka Ekhator led the way by scoring 13 points and was a rebounding force in the middle.  Sophomores Jenna Doherty and Kathryn Barry both added 9 points in the effort.

The Berwick Clash was great for the team as it provided team bonding time as well as solid basketball competition from which to learn from. For her outstanding effort in rebounding and on defense, Senior Captain Clare Lyne was named to the All-Tournament team.
