Under sunny skies, the Middlesex girls battled Southfield on the Concord River in our opening race of the season. A tail wind, varying in strength during the afternoon, allowed all four MX crews to finish in six minutes or less. In the first boat race, unbeknownst to the coaches, Southfield's stroke jumped her seat about ten strokes into the race. Since coaches were unaware of the situation and the Southfield crew recovered quickly, there was no restarting of the race. Middlesex took an early lead and continued to extend their margin over the course of the 1500-meter race. The second boat also took a slight lead over Southfield off the start and were quick to take an open water lead, which they held for the duration of the race. Since Southfield is not currently boating a fourth boat, Middlesex's third and fourth boats raced Southfield's third in the last (and windiest!) race of the day. After another strong start, both Middlesex boats pulled away rapidly from Southfield, finishing nearly a minute ahead.
