On Tuesday March 6, the Middlesex community gathered together one last time before departing for spring break in order to honor and recognize the accomplishments of the winter athletics teams. Given that this winter was one of the most action-filled and successful seasons in recent school history, there was plenty to celebrate.
The boys’ alpine ski team placed second at New Englands and later went on to capture their first ever
ISL Championship title by defeating Belmont Hill by three points. Meanwhile, for the second year in a row the girls’ alpine ski team took home the
Class B New England Championship trophy and also had a strong second place finish at the ISL’s.
On the mats, the wrestling team recorded their winningest season in program history. They finished the 2011-2012 campaign 12-7 and had three members of the team place at the prestigious Graves Kelsey tournament. On the JV side, all seven team members
won medals at the end of the year tournament at Tabor Academy.
The boys’ varsity basketball team finished the season on a high note by defeating ISL rival St. George’s 64-58 after narrowly losing to the Dragons the previous year. Some other season highlights include an
overtime victory against Groton and a strong showing at the annual Hutkins-Rouse tournament.
The girls’ varsity squash team also celebrated a significant benchmark when they won the
division III national championship title at Miss Porters in early February. The boys' varsity team placed second at the Class C New England tournament, another achievement for the program.
Finally
, the girls’ varsity ice hockey team made it all the way to the New England Championship game as the number one seed and finished the season with an overall record of 22-3. Although they suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to Proctor in the
final game, the girls left the ice with the knowledge that they had proven themselves to be one of the top ice hockey programs in New England across the division I and II levels.
